Convicts of the May 9 riots were released on humanitarian grounds: ISPR

According to Dunya News, RAWALPINDI According to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), 19 of the riots’ perpetrators have had their requests for mercy granted on humanitarian grounds in compliance with the law.

The prisoners used their right to appeal and requested clemency or a reduction in their sentences, according to a statement released by the military’s media wing on Thursday.

It stated that 48 applications had been sent to the Courts of Appeal out of the 67 inmates who submitted mercy requests.

“The remaining inmates’ mercy petitions will be decided in due time, after the legal process,” the statement stated.

The following people have received their punishments:

  1. Sahibzada Khan’s son, Muhammad Ayaz
  2. Meerdad Khan’s son Samiullah
  3. Manzoor Ahmed’s son, Laeeq Ahmed
  4. Manzoor Ahmed’s son, Amjad Ali
  5. Ameer Nawaz Khan’s son Yasir Nawaz
  6. Alam, the son of Maaz Ullah Khan
  7. Muhammad Nabi’s son, Zahid Khan
  8. Said Ghani Jan’s son, Muhammad Suleman
  9. Muhammad Azam’s son, Hamza Sharif
  10. Zahid Nisar’s son, Muhammad Salman
  11. Muhammad Arshad Butt’s son, Asher Butt
  12. Malik’s son, Muhammad Waqas Khalil Muhammad
  13. Idrees Ahmed’s son, Sufayan Idrees
  14. Naveed Ahmed Butt’s son, Muneeb Ahmed
  15. Muhammad Nazir’s son, Muhammad Ahmed
  16. Abdul Samad’s son, Muhammad Nawaz
  17. Muhammad Boota’s son, Muhammad Ali
  18. Manzoor Hussain’s son, Muhammad Bilawal
  19. Muhammad Fazal Haleem’s son, Muhammad Ilyas

Once the legalities have been completed, they will all be released.

According to the law and the constitution, everyone convicted is still entitled to an appeal and other legal remedies.

“The strength of due process and fairness, which guarantees that justice is served while also taking into account the principles of compassion and mercy, is demonstrated by the remission of punishments,” the ISPR stated.

According to the law, 20 defendants were freed earlier in April 2024 on humanitarian reasons.

The 60 offenders behind the May 9 riots, which broke out last year after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan was arrested in a fraud case, were sentenced a few days ago by the Field General Court Martial (FGCM).

According to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the penalties imposed on May 9 were given in consideration of the Supreme Court’s ruling.

It stated that the sentences were imposed following a review of all available evidence, guaranteeing that the convicted individuals were granted all of their legal rights and that due process and the proper legal procedures were completed.

Before that, 25 persons had been found guilty and given penalties.
